She's square foot gardening in raised beds near the house, and I'm working in the larger garden farther away. It's shaped into slightly raised, 2-3 foot wide beds with wood mulched paths. This is precisely because you can plant more densely but still manage to weed and maintain properly, whereas with a huge area, intensive plantings become unmanageable, like you suggest.
